Abstract:
In 2017, Dr. Maidment presented an early prototype of a next-generation digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT)
system being designed at the University of Pennsylvania. Today, the successor to that prototype is in clinical
trials. In this presentation, the design, validation, and preliminary clinical results of the system will be presented.
The system was designed using virtual clinical trials (VCTs) in which simulations of breast anatomy, image
acquisition, and image analysis were used to design a system that was optimized specifically to improve clinical
performance. This design was then built, and imaging performance was validated against the VCT simulation
through physics testing and physics simulations. Having passed this validation, we commenced two clinical trials.
The first is a clinical trial designed to demonstrate superiority of the system when compared to conventional
DBT systems. In the second trial, the system is being used in combination with a limited-angle breast PET
camera to produce high-resolution fused PET-DBT functional and anatomic images.

Speaker:
Prof. Andrew D. A. Maidment is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr.
Maidment is certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Physics, and serves as the Chief of the
Physics Section in the Department of Radiology for University of Pennsylvania Health System. He is also a
member of the Institute of Medicine and Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, and Co-Director of HHMI-
NIBIB Interfaces Scholars Program in Biomedical Imaging and Informational Sciences, University of
Pennsylvania. He holds a BASc in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto and a PhD in Medical
Biophysics from the University of Toronto. He has published more than 300 papers and book chapters, and is
world-renown for his
research in digital mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, virtual clinical trials, and image metrology.
